Ode to bodies, perfect in their imperfections
"Ode to bodies, perfect in their imperfections", a review of 'The Water Rats', an independent documentary film by Greig Coetzee and Jillian Edelstein, which will be screened in London on 11 September 2023.

Welcome to the DC Comics JewShowdown!
In which 32 Jewish DC characters (the ones who matter) will battle it out in a who-can-eat-the-most-maror-without-water competition. Or just vote for your favorite ig
(Don't try to zoom in on this thing, I'll be listing off the contestants here, the quality in this is awful, and I stretched the pics out so far to fit the frame so they're plain ugly)
I'll be starting off with 16 matches (Oh fuck) and progress from there. Here are the starting matches:
Albert Rothstein Vs. Alice Cohen II Barbara Gordon/Batgirl (DC Super Hero Girls TV Series) Vs. Barry Allen (DCEU) Benjamin Gruener/Reaper I Vs. Bruce Wayne Cissie King-Jones/Arrowette (formerly) Vs. Michael Schorr Dan Dreiberg/Nite Owl (Watchmen) Vs. Wesley Dodds/Sandman I Beth Kane/Alice Vs. Eric Cohen Eric Strauss Vs. Frieda Goren Gim Allon Vs. Booster Gold/Michael Carter (ignore my typo in the image) Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) Vs. Jesus of Nazareth (New Earth) Harleen Quinzel Vs. Jonathan Osterman (Watchmen) Katherine Kane Vs. Morris Edelstein/Morgan Edge (Earth-One) Miriam Bätzel/Miri Marvel (DC Bombshells) Vs. Moyshe Nakhman Myndi Mayer Vs. Nyssa Raatko Rachel Goldman/Sublime (Wildstorm) Vs. Rory Regan Sebastian Ives Vs. Ursula Zandt (Watchmen) Willow Zimmerman Vs. Zatanna Zatara (DC Bombshells)
This will be split into 4 rounds each divided in two (hence the two sides), and a final round. there's gonna be a day to vote for each poll, and you can find all of them in the #DC Jewish tournament tag. Starting with Round 1A, the first 8 matches I'll post all in one batch, and so on (I think it'll be clearer once I post them) I. I'll post the entirety of round 1A once this post reaches 10 notes bc I'm anxious and I need to know there is an audience, and 10 notes in enough for me. I'll post round 1B once the voting for round 1A will be closed, and do the same for the rest.
some explanations for some characters that might not seem like they fit here: All but three characters here were listed as Jews (I am Jewish, I can say that) in the DC Database category page and I've made sure there's a source to that (DCEU Barry calling himself a Jewish Boy, DC Superhero Girls Babs being in a Happy Hanukka post from the show's account, etc). The three characters that weren't are Bruce Wayne (Jewish by association with Kate Kane bc her writers don't know how Judaism works and once made her dad Jewish which would make his sister, Bruce's mom Jewish and make him Jewish), Booster Gold (confirmed to be Jewish by Jeff Katz, a Booster Gold writer, on Twitter) and Cissie King-Jones (I decided she's Jewish, and it's my poll, so shut up), and I have explanations for them all.
Enjoy!

WELCOME TO MY BLOG
(formerly know as fvrstxrrsponse)
This is a multi-muse/multi-fandom roleplaying blog featuring some of my favorite characters to write from different shows I like to watch.
Not all muses may be active. It never hurts to ask which muses are active.
Asks and Memes are always accepted.
Let's keep the drama to a minimum. We're here for entertainment but I won't entertain the nonsense.
A few things about me:
I am a mom so my free time is limited.
I work overnights so between the hours of 10pm to 6am Thurs/Fri/Sat/Sun I won't be available.
I like my rest after work and my down time when the kids go to bed so I won't be active during those times either.
However I'm always down to chat OOC with anyone if you just wanna talk. I'm totally cool with that.
Replies will be drafted and sent out accordingly. DO NOT SPAM ME WITH MESSAGES. I can do a shitty job of keeping track sometimes but I will get to it when I can. Sometimes they get lost because of Tumblr or because of the amount of threads currently going. Please have patience.

Okay but consider Roderich as a fed up Musical Director
When one of the leads is asking to hear the starting note of their phrase, which is the tonic, for the fifteenth time, and it’s become abundantly clear they just learned this song today, when you’ve memorized this score so much it plays in your nightmares and you wake up when it’s played wrong to correct it
When that one tenor comes in two beats early on the phrase you’ve told him to mark three times, but it’s a performance so you have to wait to correct the section at the notes session
When the duet is glaringly dissonant because one of them forgot to change keys and the other wants to be correct, even if it sounds terrible, because actors do not consider needs outside of their own
When the cocky auditioner decides to riff from the absolute wrong key you’re playing and you know damn sure they haven’t a clue what Dorian means.
When your producer’s fired you anyway but he has the gall to claim your musical colleagues are artistically bankrupt when they’ve had stable paychecks to support their families with for 30+ years playing a show that’s made him billions and is actually the composer’s creepy self insert fantasy - this man isn’t bullshitting anyone in claiming to be about the art (yes I am a salty theatre person spilling tea)
#hetalia#hws austria#roderich edelstein#he’s just...#so angry and so tired and passive aggressive#I see him being like a Gordon Ramsey of music#if you’re a beginner he’ll be kind and supportive#if you’re a professional fucking up consistently on basic shit?#oof

Retrospective Review - The Batman/Superman Movie: World's Finest
The story is incredibly simple. Joker teams up with Lex to kill Superman and Batman intervenes, leading to Joker and Lex vs Batmsly didn't know an and Superman. In the midst of it is a love triangle between Bruce/Lois/Clark, there is henchwoman rivalries between Harley and Mercy, there is Superman and Batman sizing each other up, and there is the teaming up and betrayals between the chalk and cheese villains. All of it is e first comic book crossover I had ever seen, containing Batman and Superman. BTAS is obviously a classic in animation and STAS is one of the best version of Superman on tv, so it was quite something for me to see these two together. And more importantly, this movie is a blast to watch still.
The story is incredibly simple. Joker teams up with Lex to kill Superman and Batman intervenes, leading to Joker and Lex vs Batman and Superman. In the midst of it is a love triangle between Bruce/Lois/Clark, there is henchwoman rivalries between Harley and Mercy, there is Superman and Batman sizing each other up, and there is the teaming up and betrayals between the chalk and cheese villains. All of it is just so much fun. This was also the first step in DCAU took towards what they would eventually grow into with Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. But this was the very first crossover in the DCAU. There is a lot of fun to be had. As a MOTP, it was a kick to have Bruce and Lois be engaged in a romance given Dana Delany had voiced Andrea in MOTP. Its actually kind of funny and a little sad to see Clark pining away and seething in jealousy. The scene where Batman and Superman first meet is awesome, as is the way Batman evens the playing field by finding out his secret identity after Superman has figured out his. They also give both heroes an opportunity to save each other. Batman saves Lois and Superman and later Superman returns the favor by saving Batman and Lois. There are also fun interactions that Bruce and Batman have with Lex. The film also explores Lois being caught in between two men with a double life and the complexities of that. She has feelings for Superman but not Clark, and feelings for Bruce but not Batman. The fight scenes are fun. All the showdowns, be it Batman crashing Joker's attempt to kill Superman, or the really funny Harley and Mercy rivalry showdowns, or the final showdown with the villains and the heroes. There are fun little character beats littered throughout the movie. Like how Joker gets pretty mad when Lex insults Batman. Its almost as if he's defensive about Batman as superhero.
I don't really have any issues with it. The animation quality is terrific and still holds up in my view. I am not the biggest fan of the Joker redesign in the TNBA era. Removing the red lips and making his eyes just black somehow makes him less scary looking. Apart from that, Superman is a bit of idiot by underestimating Joker, but I guess that's part of the point. And Lois almost moving to Gotham after just meeting Bruce for a few days was a little out of character for her. But these are minor quibbles in an otherwise brisk and well made 3 episodes which work well as a movie. Batman and Superman continued to be the crux of the DCAU going forward.
The voice acting is spectacular across the board. Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill can do no wrong as Batman and Joker in my opinion. They are the voices of these characters. Clancy Brown is absolutely the voice of Lex. Tim Daly is a terrific Superman/Clark and Dana Delany is a brilliant Lois Lane. On top of that, Arleen Sorkin as Harley is always a highlight and I was surprised to learn that Lisa Edelstein, who I know from shows like House, voiced Mercy Graves. Bob Hastings as Commissioner Gordon, Robert Costanzo as Bullock, and Efrem Zimbalist Jr. as Alfred also show up in small roles. This is without doubt a 8/10. Burnett, Dini, Berkowitz, and Masuda, who were the writers and directors of these episodes, really have the handle on these characters.

Camelid figurine
Date: 1400–1533
Geography: Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, or Argentina
Culture: Inca
Medium: Alloys of silver, gold and copper
This male camelid figurine, potentially representing a llama, has a solid head and a hollow body. While many similar camelid figurines are made of hammered sheet, X-radiography confirms that this figurine was cast by the lost wax method (see image 3) in two distinct casting stages to achieve different metallic effects. The first step was the casting of the llama’s head (see image 4), neck, torso (see image 5), and tail (see image 6), as well as its legs, with a silver-copper-gold alloy. As part of this first step, the wax form of the torso was modelled around a ceramic core that now forms a hollow space within the camelid’s body (the space is not visible to the viewer as it has been covered over by a silver metal plug at the chest, visible in the X-ray). The second casting step was the creation of the head and upper or rear elements of the body and tail in a more gold-rich silver metal. This second casting operation was accomplished by casting directly onto the solidified silver-rich portions. X-radiography reveals extensive porosity throughout most of the silver metal areas, a feature caused by gas trapped in the molten metal during casting, which contrasts with a lack of porosity in the gold-rich areas. This difference suggests that the second step in casting may have been undertaken to correct flaws or areas of weakness associated with the porosity in the first. XRF analysis of the two metal elements indicates that the silver-rich metal contains approximately 72% silver, 20% copper and 7% gold while the more gold-rich areas contain roughly 50% silver, 42% gold, and 8% copper. Following casting, the metal worker employed tracing and engraving tools to form the details of the inner ear, the eyes, the nostrils, the mouth, and the toes. The object may be considered a huaca, a Quechua and Aymara word for a sacred being among Andean peoples. Huacas may take the form of artificial anthropomorphic or zoomorphic objects, as well as rocks, mountains, and mineral sources (Cruz 2009). Throughout the Andes, camelids, including two wild and two domesticated species, are prized for their wool and meat (Moore 2016). For the Incas, their human ancestors, along with camelids, were thought to have come into existence from a cave at Pacariqtambo. In the Andes, camelids, whose hides and bones were turned into a range of products, are charged with carrying goods as part of caravans. Camelid figurines may be components of the Inca ritual performance of capac hucha, a Quecha term meaning ‘royal obligation’, in which, according to 16th century Spanish chroniclers (Cieza de León 1959, 190-193; Diez de Betzanos 1996, 46, 132), could involve annual celebrations in Cusco where prophecies were given for the coming year as well as sacrificial offerings of llamas, maize, and children, whether as a dedication to the Sun or for particular royal events, including the Sapa Inca’s death. As part of this performance, in some cases, juveniles were ritually married in Cuzco and then sent on processions to points as far north and south as Isla de la Plata in Ecuador and Cerro El Plomo in Chile, respectively, where they were sacrificed and buried, wearing textiles, and accompanied by dressed metal and Spondylus spp. shell figurines, ceramic vessels, and other shell and metalwork. The motivation of the capac hucha was to commemorate particular royal events and to mark the expansion of the Inca Empire. However, such figurines may have been deposited with other intentions, and without human burials. In one case, four camelid figurines in metal and shell were recovered in a line oriented to the southeast and in association with stones related to the usnu, or altar, of Cuzco as part of the dedication of sacred space in the Haukaypata, or main plaza of Cuzco (Farrington and Raffino 1996, 73). Camelid figurines were occasionally designed with special ornamentations, such as those seen on two figurines from the region of Lake Titicaca, including the attachment of a textile blanket adorned with gold appliqué and cinnabar (AMNH B/1618) and a highly corrugated surface to index the texture of the animal’s pelage (AMNH B/1619). These ornamentations, or inherent aspects of the design of the figurines, testifies to the ways that metallurgists distinguished their ritualized work. At present, there is little archaeological indication of production sites for these figurines, but Spanish chroniclers point to Cuzco. Many Inca camelid figurines in metal tend to be around the height of 1974.271.36, but there are exceptions (such as the two aforementioned AMNH figurines) that are larger, at 23–24 cm. The height groupings of the camelid figurines are in some way comparable to those of the Inca anthropomorphic figurines in metal but appear to show a bipartite rather than a tripartite grouping (see McEwan 2015, 282, n. 15). In Spondylus spp., the heights of camelid figurines may range from approximately 2 to 7 cm without clear groupings across that range. It should be recognized that many of the sites from which these figurines have been recovered are sacred to local indigenous communities (see Aguero 2004, Fine-Dare 2009, and Politis 2001 on the display of human remains from the mountaintop capac hucha site of Llullaillaco in Argentina). Eleven camelid figurines in silver, gold, and Spondylus spp. were associated with the human male juvenile’s grave at Llullaillaco but none was found with the two human female graves (MAAM 2007, 52). A hollow camelid figurine, made of gold-silver-copper sheets joined mainly by solder, was recovered from the capac hucha burial of a 7-year-old human male at Cerro Aconcagua, also in Argentina (Bárcena 2004). While camelid figurines are often found with male capac hucha burials (King 2016), a strict gender correlation is not clear. At Choquepujio, in the Cusco Valley, a Spondylus male camelid figurine was found resting in a Spondylus valve associated with the Inca burial of a female juvenile (11–12 years old) inside a pre-Inca temple (Gibaja et al. 2014). In excavating a burial of a male juvenile (6–7 years old), investigators recovered two Spondylus female camelid figurines. In these assemblages, camelid figurines were social actors, having their own camay, a Quechua term that could be translated as “energizing power,” through interaction with other assemblage components and with the human actors that made and deposited them. The deterioration of these objects, or their removal from their original locations in the earth, has surely changed their efficacy.
